Automated Part Dyeing Increases Productivity, Ensures Consistent Results, and Reduces Post-Processing Costs
These are a few of the most common questions we get from customers looking for a full 3D print-to-product solution.
Can I dye 3D printed SLS parts?
SLS produces white parts that can be dyed many colours. As such, SLS parts can be dyed a more vibrant colour than MJF which has a black base.
Nylon is hygroscopic — it easily absorbs water. As such, when nylon absorbs water that contains a water-soluble dye, it absorbs the water and dye and ends up permanently coloured.
How do I get my part dark black?
Dyeing parts black often produces inconsistent results. The blue base of black results in parts with a blue or purple tint. Typically, to get the parts darker, manufacturers shot peen or oil polish the parts to get a darker color.
Why is SLS hard to colour?
SLS is the easiest out of the Nylon powder printers to colour. But dyeing in itself can be tricky. Many manufacturers dye parts in boiling water using professional nylon Rit Dye. It is difficult to produce consistent results using this manual part dyeing method.
Manual Pot Dyeing vs. Industrial DeepDye Coloring
- A manual process with little consistency or control.
- Colour options are limited.
- Colour matching is unpredictable.
- Colours fade quickly under UV light or heat.
- The largest colour palette available.
- Industrial, predictable & automated process.
- Solutions for industries, e.g. Automotive or Neon X Colours.
- Colour match certified for consistent end-use part manufacturing.
Pot Dyed Colours Show Significantly Higher Colour Fading
End-use products are often exposed to UV light and heat. This is where the strengths and weaknesses of the dyeing process becomes most apparent.
DyeMansion ran a number of scientific tests comparing pot dyed parts to DeepDye Colored parts. In the test, the conventional textile pot dyed parts showed a significantly higher colour fading than parts dyed with DyeMansion DM Black 01.
