We have been 3D Scanning at Rapid 3D since 2006. Back then it was pretty much seen as magic and the scanners on the market were few and very expensive with a starting price tag of around R600k at today’s ~ROE of R16.50 = Euro1.00. Needless to say a lot has changed and we thought it would be good to unpack things a little and tell you more about our current portfolio of scanners.
Specifications! Lets start by discussing the 2 main specs that are relevant when looking at scanning performance.
Accuracy
This refers to the expected accuracy when the scanner captures a point in space. Most scanners using optical capture systems will be in the range 0.03mm to 1mm for larger laser scanning units.
Point Density/ Resolution
This is the minimum distance between measurement points that the scanning system can deliver. This will typically range from 0.1mm to 10mm, this spec will directly affect the detail captured when scanning.
There are other specs like capture speed and texture capture that will also affect the scanning experience.
Now lets take a look at some scanners, starting with the higher end units. I will also list typical applications for each of the scanners as well as their price in ZAR at ~ROE R16.50 = EURO1.00 and ~ZAR15.00 = USD1.00.
Artec Ray
Approx R900 000 excl VAT
High accuracy long-range laser 3D scanner, ideal for precise capture of large objects.
The fastest and most accurate long-range 3D scanner with laser technology for precise capture of large objects such as wind turbines, ship propellers, airplanes and buildings.
Producing 3D scans of the highest quality, Artec Ray scans with submillimeter distance precision and best in class angular accuracy. As a result, data capture is noticeably cleaner than that from other 3D laser scanners, with noise levels at an absolute minimum. This speeds up post-processing significantly, making it a hassle free job.
Artec Leo
Approx R387 000 excl VAT
A smart professional 3D scanner for a next-generation user experience.
The first 3D scanner to offer onboard automatic processing, Artec Leo is able to provide the most intuitive workflow, making 3D scanning as easy as taking a video.
As you scan your object, you can see the 3D replica being built in real time on Leo’s touch panel screen. Rotate the 3D model, check if you have captured all areas, and fill in any parts you may have missed.
Artec Space Spider
Approx R372 000 excl VAT
Precision at your fingertips.
A new and enhanced precision instrument for CAD users and engineers, Artec Space Spider is a high-resolution 3D scanner based on blue light technology.
It is perfect for capturing small objects or intricate details of large industrial objects in high resolution, with steadfast accuracy and brilliant color.
The scanner’s ability to render complex geometry, sharp edges and thin ribs sets our technology apart.
It is an ideal industrial 3D scanner for high resolution capturing of objects such as moulding parts, PCBs, keys, coins or even a human ear, followed by the export of the final 3D model to CAD software.
Space Spider offers almost unlimited possibilities in areas such as reverse engineering, quality control, product design and manufacturing.
Artec Eva
Approx R297 000 excl VAT
Fast 3D scanner for professionals. Named best 3D scanner under $50,000 by iReviews.
This structured light 3D scanner is the ideal choice for making a quick, textured and accurate 3D model of medium sized objects such as a human bust, an alloy wheel, or a motorcycle exhaust system. It scans quickly, capturing precise measurements in high resolution, which allows for almost unlimited applications, without the use of additional equipment.
Light, fast and versatile, Eva is our most popular scanner and a market leader in handheld 3D scanners. Based on safe-to-use structured light scanning technology, it is an excellent all round solution for capturing objects of almost any kind, including objects with black and shiny surfaces.
Artec Eva Lite
Approx R147 000 excl VAT
Affordable 3D scanner for professional results.
Eva Lite is the budget version of the bestselling white light Artec Eva 3D scanner. It features the same accuracy specs, but with reduced functionality: Eva Lite has geometry only tracking and capture. As a result, this affordable 3D scanner can be used for making high quality textureless 3D scans when scanning geometrically rich objects, such as the human body.
This makes Eva Lite an attractive and inexpensive option for healthcare clinics with a limited budget or indeed anyone who is interested in purchasing a professional white light 3D scanner with minimal funds.
Additionally, since Eva Lite does not capture color, it collects significantly less data. As a result, it is less power hungry and can be combined with a more affordable computer. See details on recommended makes and models in our support center or contact our support team for individual queries.
Eva Lite can be upgraded to Eva at any point for the price difference between the two scanners.
So if the budget allows it at a later point, you can easily get the full functionality from your 3D scanner.
And for schools and universities, providing students with high tech professional equipment has now become even more affordable. As part of the Artec Educational Package, the price for Eva Lite is even more accessible and also includes 20 licenses of Artec Studio, two years free upgrade and a two year guarantee.
